Nausea, fatigue and a feeling of tightness in the breasts are the first signs of pregnancy. Many women often notice these symptoms long before the rule goes away. This can sometimes change the outflow during pregnancy and thus be a sign that offspring is due.
Every woman knows vaginal discharge. During the normal monthly cycle, the consistency changes. Hormonal changes affect both the strength and the consistency of the vaginal discharge. The vaginal secretions are used to acidify the vaginal milieu. The lactic acid bacteria found in the vagina decompose a storage form of the sugar (glycogen) in lactic acid.
This lactic acid stabilizes the vaginal flora and also acts as a protective barrier against bacteria. An increased circulation of the vaginal region and an increase in the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone lead to an increased discharge. The outflow maintains its normal consistency and color. Also, the smell should not change noticeably. A normal discharge is an expression of a healthy vaginal flora.
Changes in color, consistency or smell should always be considered a warning. Pain or itching also indicates an infection, which should be clarified by a doctor. A friable, white discharge may indicate a fungal infection.
A discharge caused by a fungal infection does not usually smell. But he goes along with strong itching and redness in the genital area. Redness also occurs with a bacterial infection. Here, however, the discharge smells very unpleasant. Affected describe the smell as fishy.
A watery discharge should also alert the affected women. A neutral smelling, watery discharge may be an indication of a tear in the amniotic sac. Since this is a serious pregnancy complication, a gynecologist should be consulted as soon as possible for further clarification.
Infections of the vagina can be dangerous for the child during pregnancy. Therefore, a doctor should always be consulted if the discharge suddenly becomes clear, bloody or very strong. Even with changes in color and texture a doctor's appointment should be agreed. There are spillage infections that need to be treated with antibiotic-containing vaginal suppositories to protect the child and mother.
A wrong and / or excessive intimate hygiene can attack the vaginal environment and promote infections. Intensive washing with soap, intimate deodorants and vaginal douching should not only be taboo during pregnancy.
The remedies damage the self-cleaning mechanisms of the vagina and disturb the balance in the flora. Bacteria and fungi can easily multiply in a disturbed environment. Inflammation with increased discharge are the annoying and dangerous consequence. Even close-fitting laundry made of synthetic materials disturbs the breathing of the vagina and the composition of the vaginal fluid. Basically, simple hygiene rules are enough to maintain the environment in the vagina and prevent infections. Clear water is enough to cleanse the vagina. Alternatively, special wash lotions with a low pH can be used. PH-neutral washing lotions are not suitable for the genital area. In addition, the women should make sure that they always wipe from front to back after bowel movements.
When wiping from back to front, bacteria can get out of the stool into the genital area and cause infections there. But not only the pregnant women, but also their partners should comply with certain hygiene rules. In the case of poor hygiene, the so-called smegma can accumulate under the foreskin of the penis. This is bacteria-containing. During intercourse, the bacteria can enter the vagina of the man's penis and cause infections there.
An increased discharge in pregnancy is usually not a cause for concern. Rather, the discharge is even the protection of the unborn child. It is the expression of a healthy vaginal flora. This protects the unborn child from ascending infections. Bacterial vaginosis can be a big risk to the child. Even vaginal candidosis can damage the child.
In a healthy vaginal flora, however, neither fungus nor bacteria can settle in the vagina. Thus, the healthy flora prevents infections and the child is protected. Those who find the heavy discharge troublesome should remember that this symptom is only temporary. In some women, the discharge during pregnancy is less, in other women, it increases shortly before labor.
A stronger discharge at the end of the pregnancy can therefore also be regarded as an indication of the impending birth. The only cause for concern is when the discharge is foul-smelling, yellow, green, thick or friable, or when the discharge is in combination with burning or itching. Nevertheless, anxious mothers should visit their gynecologist once too much rather than too little.
