Domperidone is a medical product used to prevent various symptoms that may result from the gastrointestinal tract. In particular, the nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and all types of abdominal pain are included.
Likewise, however, the feeling of fullness can be treated with the remedy. In addition to the acute use in such conditions, a therapy of protracted forms of illness is conceivable. The domperidone is thus an antiemetic - a preparation that is just to inhibit nausea and nausea.
The domperidone is used, for example, when traveling, where the movement of the means of transport causes such symptoms. But also in connection with a pregnancy, medical measures or in the context of surgery, it can come again and again to the aforementioned diseases, which are suppressed by the domperidone.
In general, domperidone is thought to act as an antagonist of dopamine. This is a neurotransmitter and thus a messenger, which is considered to be the trigger of irritation in the nerve cells.
Crucial here is that this messenger can connect to the so-called dopamine receptor in the nervous system and thus only the nausea and vomiting triggers. Domperidone, which blocks the aforementioned pathway of dopamine and does not allow its access to the receptor, now starts here. However, the symptoms are not necessarily excluded.
The preparation stimulates the activity of the gastrointestinal area, which may initially lead to an increased perception of dizziness and other concomitant circumstances. In this respect, the domperidone is already being replaced by alternative antiemetics in severe diseases. However, where rapid emptying of the stomach is desired, the treatment agent can be used.
Conceivable would be the emergencies of poisoning or incompatible foods. It also proves disadvantageous that the mode of action of domperidone could still not be clarified clearly and that it is precisely the elicitation of increased gastric activity that remains riddled with puzzles.
The domperidone is therefore always used where acute symptoms of the intestine and the stomach are noticeable. For example, in traffic on an airplane or on a ship, where the turbulence of the journey and the nervousness of the moment lead to a slight nausea. Likewise, the aftercare of surgery can cause inconvenience, causing vomiting and significant dizziness.
Again, it is necessary to use domperidone for the acute relief of symptoms. On the other hand, it is also possible to remedy protracted and even chronic clinical pictures. These can be triggered by pregnancy. The morning sickness is known to many affected women and is reduced by the domperidone to a tolerable level. If the manifestations can not be cured, the remedy is usually replaced by stronger preparations.
In such cases, it must be assumed that a switch to alternative products or even medical intervention is necessary in order to get to the root of the actual suffering. In some patients, even organic causes suggest that domperidone can not gain access to the dopamine receptor, where it can exert its blocking effect.
Despite its tendency to exclude diseases in the gastrointestinal area, domperidone will, in a few cases, exacerbate it with its onset. This is usually a temporary side effect.
However, if the product is to be used only for a limited period of time, some patients will experience fertility problems, including permanent use of domperidone, which may even lead to impotence. In addition, an increase in the prolactin level can often be detected especially in pregnant women, which is often accompanied by changes in the breast milk flow.
Similarly, a negative effect of domperidone on the heart has been scientifically confirmed. In particular, higher doses of the agent can lead to cardiac arrhythmias and even cause cardiac death. Domperidone should therefore only be used under medical supervision.
