If there are strong deviations in the mineral balance, severe health problems threaten.
Saline is the mineral that plays the biggest role in the body in terms of quantity. Sodium is a component of the mineral. It is indispensable for the development of nerve impulses, muscle activity and water balance. Together with chloride, which is the second component of the common salt, it helps the body to regulate acid balance. A lack of sodium may indicate kidney disease. Excessive loss of sodium chloride is also dangerous if the mineral is excreted excessively in diarrhea or other circumstances (water tablets). The doctor instructs the patient in such cases to increased absorption of minerals.
Calcium is a mineral that is essential for the formation of bones and teeth. The mineral takes the human mainly on the consumption of milk yogurt and cheese. Calcium has special medical importance in internal medicine. The mineral is involved in blood clotting and sometimes has to be lowered by medication to prevent heart attacks.
Important minerals are also magnesium and potassium. In various diseases, the need for these minerals is increased. Patients with high blood pressure should refrain from salt and take instead potassium salts. Magnesium is a mineral that doctors recommend for muscle cramps.
Many other minerals have important biological and medical importance. Minerals contain not only the quantity elements, also the trace elements contained in the minerals are vital food components.
Meaning for Training & Sport
A greater need for minerals exists not only in different diseases. Athletes must be careful that no critical electrolyte loss occurs. Because sweating in intense body activity, humans lose minerals on the skin. Saline is the mineral that is contained in the sweat in the highest concentration. Beverages with a high content of minerals are therefore indispensable in any sports training.
Often mineral waters are recommended, which have a low content of sodium. For athletes that is not true, the mineral sodium may be slightly higher in their drinks.
But not only on the sodium balance athletes should be considered. Other important minerals lose a heavily contaminated body. Thus, magnesium, potassium and calcium have a positive effect on the optimal functioning of muscles and heart. The good of the good can not be done in this regard. Because a surplus is not dangerous. Healthy kidneys excrete the minerals that the body does not need.
